The Chief Advisor to the Interim Government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has expressed deep concern over the massive fire that destroyed a large number of houses in the capital’s Karail slum. He described the loss of countless families as “painful for all.”

In a statement on Wednesday, the Chief Advisor wished the injured a speedy recovery and expressed his deepest condolences to the affected families.

Dr. Yunus said, “The suffering of the families who were left homeless in the Karail slum fire is painful for all of us. The government will ensure all necessary assistance for the rehabilitation of the affected.”

The statement said that the concerned authorities have been instructed to quickly intensify relief and rescue operations. At the same time, the Chief Advisor has also instructed to investigate the cause of the fire and take effective measures to prevent such accidents in the future.

An estimated 1,500 houses in the Karail slum were burnt down in the massive fire that broke out on Tuesday evening and were damaged in various ways. The fire was brought under control after more than five hours with the efforts of 19 units of the fire service. However, no casualties have been reported in the incident so far.
Fire Service Director (Operations and Maintenance) Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury spoke to reporters at the scene after controlling the fire. He said that it is initially estimated from talking to local residents that about 1,500 houses have been damaged in the fire. The actual extent of the damage will be known after the investigation.
